The landscape of how a guest reserves a room with a hotel has certainly changed since Al Gore invented the Internet. (Sorry, I had to! J)
Back when I first started in the hotel industry guests would either call a hotel directly or if booking with a chain hotel, they had the option to call the Brands Toll Free number.
Then the Internet came along. Soon after, all of those sites such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Priceline and so forth. In my business, this is referred to a “TPI or Third Party Intermediary” or “OTA or Online Travel Agency.”
Many consumers have been and currently are confused as to whom to turn to when they want to secure an advanced reservation at a hotel. There are so many choices now as to “How” one can reserve a room. In the hotel industry we call these “Booking Channels.”
One of the biggest questions that consumers have is this: “Which channel will give me the best deal?”
This is a great question, as we all like to get discounts whenever possible on all of our purchases.
The real answer to this question is that booking directly with any hotel will give you the best rate. Equally important, booking direct will most likely also give you the best flexibility if and when you need to make changes to your upcoming reservation up to and including making a cancellation or changing the type of room you’d prefer.
In most situations when booking with a TPI or OTA, you lose the ability to communicate directly with your hotel of choice after that reservation is made. Whereas, when you book direct with your hotel, you don’t lose that freedom.
Direct bookings with your upcoming hotel are the most profitable type of booking for that hotel. You see, when you book through an OTA or a TPI, the hotel pays a fairly high commission which may range from 15-30% of the entire stay. When you book directly to a hotel, they do not pay any commission.
Please note: Keep in mind that booking directly may mean calling the hotel direct or booking on their website.
Finally, when you book direct with your upcoming hotel, you are also speaking with a local team member who knows his/her hotel and the area better than any online source.
So when booking your next stay at The Hotel Pattee, we’d certainly appreciate you giving us a call directly to make your arrangements.
