We have had such a fun year with our Frontier Shack Food Operation at the Flat Tire Lounge in Madrid,
as well as with our Hotel Pattee Diner on Wheels unit which we’ve brought around to several Des
Moines Regional events.
Some of those events have included the National Balloon Classic, Bell Tower Festival, Madrid Days, and White Rock Conservancy and this weekend we will be at the Granger Days in Granger, IA and Thomas the Train in Boone IA.
This is our first year at working these two outside operations, and as I mentioned above, we are having a great time and have met/served some great people.
When it comes to the traveling unit, I have been blessed with a totally unexpected benefit. Something that I never intended to encounter. Can you maybe guess what that is?
I have discovered what I will refer to as an “Inner Circle” of comradery among the food truck vendors.
Let me explain.
When setting up at each event, you tend to introduce yourself to fellow food vendor neighbors as we
are usually placed in the same general area. If you don’t get a chance to meet everybody before the
event starts, you will certainly find time during the event.
What tends to happen is that we, as an Inner Circle, will cook our specialty for the other vendors (at no
charge.) You see vendors walking to each other’s spot delivering their great food or drinks. It reminds
me of like a small community in which fellow citizens bake goodies for their neighbors. Since our first event in 2015, I have had the opportunity to enjoy some great cuisine ranging from handmade tacos, homemade Crab Rangoon, Smoked ribs and many, many others.
Here is the other unexpected surprise for me: So many of the same vendors attend the same events
that I do. There truly is an inner circle of us and we not only share food, but share ideas on how we can
better serve our customers along with what future events we should all attend. In short, I have made
some great new friends and look forward to many years of working side by side with them.
So in addition to promoting the hotel, meeting and serving great customers, and of course making some
additional revenue; I’ve made some great friends and get the chance to eat & drink very well. Luckily, I
haven’t gained any weight as you tend to work off the calories at each event.
Oh yes, last but not least, I have had the chance to work very closely with my daughter Miranda who has helped me at several events.
Come see us at an upcoming event, or visit us at the Flat Tire Lounge! Have a special event that you
need a food truck? Give me a call or send me an email. No group is too small!!!
