One room that we don’t have a theme for at The Hotel Pattee if that for Yogi Berra. If we did, I can only imagine the fun we would have!
Yogi just celebrated his 90th Birthday, and there has been a national petition to encourage President Obama to award Yogi Berra America’s Highest Civilian Award, “The Presidential Medal of Freedom.” Here is the White House response as reported by CBS Sports. Link: HERE
Sure many of us know Yogi for some of his fantastic quotes of which we will talk about later, but did you know that he served in our US Navy during World War II, including the D-Day Invasion? He has also been a longtime advocate of diversity and tolerance in baseball and elsewhere. Yogi also has been and continues to be a huge supporter of education for all! As far back as 1959, he started a scholarship at Columbia University.
As far as athletic ability, he played 19 years in Major League Baseball bringing home 10 World Series
rings and 3 MVP Awards.
Of course Yogi is most noted for his paradoxical quotes, now referred to as “yogi-sims.” They make me
laugh but also make me just think. (I know, that is scary!)
The one I remember the most is “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
Here are some others:
“I wish I had an answer to that, because I am tired of answering that question.”
“Baseball is 90% mental and the other half is physical.”
“It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility.”
“The future ain’t what it used to be.”

So Happy Birthday Yogi and I hope the President awards you the Presidential Medal of Freedom! In the
interim, please come visit us at The Hotel Pattee in Perry Iowa. We’ll leave the light on for you! Oops, that is another brand!
