This Friday will be our first Lit By the Sun Dinner and Concert at the Hotel Pattee in our Ballroom. We have been booking musicians Fridays and Saturdays evenings and have added Sunday afternoon but the Lit By the Sun Series pairing Dinner and Concert showcasing talented people pursuing there passions begins this Friday, June 13 with Max Gomez.
The series came about from the idea of house concerts and listening room events. Jen Heins, our music booking agent has been hosting nationally touring musicians in her home for several years and with the Hotel Pattee being somewhere between a hotel and a bed and breakfast, it seemed a natural location for this style of concert. Add in the tremendous response by those that have experienced our Chef's Table, pairing the culinary creativity of Chef Chris Caes and the talents of singer songwriters inspired the Lit By the Sun Series.
THE DINNER: Chef Caes has always loved cooking but it was a hobby, at first. After deciding following his passion for food needed to have a larger place in his life, he pursued his career as a Chef and is now the Executive Chef at the Hotel Pattee.
As part of the Lit By the Sun experience the chef was challenged to create a menu inspired by the event. This Friday's menu is a Roasted Asparagus Salad, Green Chili Tilapia, Bisconchitos with fruit Salad. Chef Caes supports working with local food sources and with the help of two local vendors is creating a roasted asparagus salad for the starter. For the rest of the menu Chef Caes turned his inspiration to Max Gomez's home of Taos, New Mexico. The entree of Green Chili Tilapia and dessert of Bisconchitos (a traditional cookie) with fruit Salad are common favorites of the area and a great introduction to southwestern flavors.
The Chef's Table experience has been a great way to give Chef Caes the freedom to experiment and take his talents out of the normal restaurant routine. The Lit By the Sun Menus will be created with that same freedom and let our chef do what inspires him.
THE MUSIC: Lit By the Sun will focus on nationally touring singer songwriters. The setting for a listening concert is different then a club show. The focus is on the musician, the stories and the inspirations. Some are heartfelt, some funny but always great music. The touring musicians are usually spending a few weeks to a couple months on the road playing in homes, bars, theaters and in some cases large auditoriums but they are also now coming to Perry, IA and making the Hotel Pattee a destination.
Excerpt of Max Gomez Bio: "The son of an artisanal furniture craftsman, Gomez grew up watching his father, learning the tools of the trade while simultaneously learning his way around the frets of his guitar. The workmanlike quality of his songwriting carries over from his days spent in the woodshed through an economy of words, phrase and narrative. A blues enthusiast from an early age, the young Gomez immersed himself in the primordial Delta and traditional folk blues of Lead Belly, Big Bill Broonzy and, of course, Robert Johnson. Though 1,200 miles and decades removed from his Mississippi heroes, Gomez had his imagination to fill in the gaps. Having honed his chops on the blues, Max turned his interest to traditional American folk music; “I’m influenced by the old stuff,” Max admits. “To me, that’s the best music.” As the Harry Smith anthology gave way to contemporary masters Townes Van Zandt, Kris Kristofferson, Guy Clark and John Hiatt, so did Gomez’s songwriting. “The songs I write are not real straightforward. You have to decode them. I like when the listener has to create their own story, rather than be told what’s happening.” In short, storytelling that oscillates between everyman poetics and enigma."
