After the tour, they arrived in the Spring Valley Ballroom for lunch. Prior to being served their first course, we reviewed the agenda and started the PowerPoint program:
¨ General Social and Dining Etiquette Rules
¨ The formal table setting
¨ Serving Food, Passing Dishes
¨ Table Manners
¨ Dress Code
There were several rewarding moments for me during this afternoon, but a few stick out more than others. The students asked great questions. They truly were at the event to learn and they were engaged with the entire program.
It was great to see them implement some of the new Etiquette rules that they learned that day. Young men standing up when a lady at their table stood up to leave the table, and then standing back up when she returned to also pull her chair out.
Observing students turning over their eating utensil on their plate when they were finished. One young man didn’t do this at first, but soon realized that our Banquet Server did not remove his salad plate. After several minutes, I saw the light bulb go off. He turned his fork over and then she quickly removed his plate.
Seeing the students leave their napkin on their chair when they had to excuse themselves from the table.
I could go on and on…to say the least, I wish you could have been in my place to see this afternoon unfold.
I would like to thank their leader Linda for choosing to bring the students to The Hotel Pattee. In addition, I would like to tip my hat to Linda for her belief in teaching these young people some life skills that will be with them forever.
I can’t wait until next year when you bring the next group over to the hotel!
