A retreat for the entire group
Around 400 African Americans settled in the Perry area towards the end of the Nineteenth Century, either to work on the mines in Angus or on the railroad.
Today people from the Sudan, Somalia, and other parts of Africa are finding their way to Iowa to start a new life.
The Hotel Pattee's African Room was created to honor those African immigrants as well as the African-Americans in the community. Decorated with a wide variety of artifacts and fabrics, it is a virtual visits to an exotic travel destination without the need of passports, visas, vaccinations, or airline tickets.
