Along with the railroad in the late 19th Century came immigrants from all over the world, including China. Some of them settled in Perry.
Research of the region's past discovered that a Chinese man named William Arshong had owned and operated a market in Perry in 1875 as well evidence of other Chinese immigrants in the area. No one is sure how or why Chinese immigrants arrived in Dallas County, IA.
Some of the room decor was donated from Roberta Ahmanson's private collection from a trip to Hong Kong. The room contains traditional Chinese folk dolls and a contemporary teapot. The most dramatic artifact is a 1920's robe from Beijing. The parasol ceiling lamps are hand painted by Tracie McCloskey.
Now Iowa is sister state to both Hebei Province in China and Taiwan, Iowa's second largest trading partner. this room is for our Chinese friends and their ancestors who settled here so long ago.
